Groth was one of the first wineries that I visited in California way back in 1999. It was a day that we also visited Silver Oak Napa and Hess. I remember two things from that visit early in my ‘wine life’: 1) The wines were delicious, and 2) there was a different feel at this winery than the others. A sense of family. In 1981, Dennis Groth was CFO of a small tech startup called Atari. He and his wife Judy wanted to purchase some property to grow Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1985, they decided to dive in head first to the wine world and he left Atari and moved his family to the property and focused on growing and making the best Cabernet Sauvignon possible. It paid off and their first full time vintage earned them a 100 point score with winemaker Nils Venge.
This family tradition continues, as the Groth’s daughter Suzanne took over the reins of the winery in 2017 when Dennis retired. The wines continue to shine. The 2018 Cabernet from Groth is both energetic and elegant
